DANCER, ARTIST, ALL AROUND BADASS

CELEBRATING MOVEMENT: Our journey gives us the opportunity to meet many inspirational figures across fitness, fashion, and culture that embody #caraalife. We caught up with Caraa ambassador Bethany Meyers, Master Instructor and former Director of Training and Development at SLT, in between classes to find out just how she dances through life.

Bethany has an instantly noticeable and magnetic joie de vivre. She is fierce, fun, creative, and effortlessly cool. Her motto?

You don’t grow old by living. You grow old by losing interest in living.

When not at her home base of SLT blasting Sia, she can be found shopping in the East Village, dancing with friends, unwinding at yoga, or zipping to high-energy workouts like cycling, boxing, and dance. Daily Kombucha is key. When she gets home she saves the TV for sick days and snow days and instead she hones her creativity by painting, sewing, drawing, sculpting, and dreaming of far off adventures in Paris.

EXERCISE & FITNESS

I don’t think of myself as a standard fitness instructor. Working out should be fun, it should be a lifestyle, it should be something you do to walk taller and stay healthy. If I don’t want to go to a gym for two hours, why should I expect you to? So I try to be the example I want others to follow.

Bethany’s love of athleticism began at an early age. “I was a competitive cheerleader throughout high school and early college until I injured my back in a fall from a stunt. I started practicing yoga and it was the only thing to relieve my back pain. Yoga made its way to a Pilates practice and here we are.”

I get bored easily and love a good high intensity class. Because I do SLT so often, I try to switch it up to keep things fresh. Cardio is my love/hate relationship and yoga is my dream girl. You’ll find me working on the former about 1-2 times per week in a cycling, boxing, or dance class. And the latter? 3 times per week, she keeps me sane.

When I don’t want to work out, I always ask myself—will the feeling of accomplishment I have after the class outweigh the feeling of dread I have before the class? And the answer is almost always yes. I do it for how good I feel after.

SIGNATURE MOVES

She believes working out–and LIFE–should be enjoyed. “Don’t give up the things you love. Find a way to substitute. Plain yogurt can substitute for cream in cooking. Eat bean based tortilla chips instead of corn. Dark chocolate instead of milk. Don’t count calories, read ingredients.”

Hydration is also key. “I created my own smoothie Indie Fresh and I hand picked all of the ingredients. It contains blackberries, coconut water, avocado, banana, and basically all the stuff you need pre- and post workout. It’s delicious!”

My staple outfit is black leggings–elevated. AKA: A unique fabric, cut, design, etc. A crop top with an interesting strap. Nike black leather wedges with layers of black jackets. I love to layer workout clothes so I look tomboy sporty during the day, and kick-your-ass-princess while I teach.

I had been searching for a bag like Caraa for quite a while … it was a solution for my life. You can carry everything you need for a full day, your bag still looks cute and your outfit looks put together.

WHAT’S IN YOUR CARAA BAG?

“What ISN’T in my Caraa bag? Laptop, day planner (yes, super old school!), a bag of 15 different lipsticks/glosses (seriously), eye drops, honey lozenges, after workout skin spray (Lumion Skin), grip socks, essential oils, noise canceling headphones because we live in New York and it’s loud here!, and a fine tip sharpie. Everything for the entire day ... ta da!
